Expanding wind power production

BKW FMB Energy Ltd (BKW) is set to acquire Volturino Wind Srl., an Italian project company active in wind power production. BKW's intention in making this acquisition is to set up a further wind farm in Volturino (Apulia) by the end of 2011 and hence expand its production of CO2-free energy.

The planned wind farm is located in one of the windiest regions in Italy. Wind farms in Apulia can be operated with up to 2,500 full load hours per year, making the region particularly attractive for wind farm developers. With a total output of just over 25 megawatts (MW), the wind farm will comprise 14 wind turbines and will produce approx. 68 gigawatt hours of CO2-free electricity annually - equivalent to the annual power consumption of some 19,000 households. Start-up is planned for the end of 2011. Investment costs are totalling in the region of 56 million euros. By purchasing the project company and constructing the wind farm, BKW is strengthening its commitment to new renewable energy and is further expanding its production capacity in Italy. BKW recently entered into a strategic partnership with Fortore Energia S.p.A. (Fortore), a leading Italian company in wind energy production, acquiring a 33% stake in Fortore's recently founded company Fortore Wind. The partnership aims to construct and operate wind power production installations in Italy by 2016 with a total output of some 600 megawatts. Installations are already in operation with an installed output of 140 MW.
